WINNER – THE INDIE BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD
‘The Happiest Refugee’ by Anh Do
Anh Do nearly didn't make it to Australia.  His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea, as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat.  But nothing could stop their desire to make a better life in a new country. Life in Australia was hard: an endless succession of back-breaking work, crowded rooms, ruthless landlords and make-do everything.  Things got harder when his father then left home - a loss Anh felt  deeply as his mother struggled to support the family on her own. His mother's sacrifice was a huge inspiration to Anh as he began to build the life he wanted in a country he loves. This is an incredible, uplifting and inspiring life story of one of our favourite personalities. Tragedy, humour, heartache and unswerving determination - a big life with big dreams. Anh's story will move and amuse all who read it.
What independent booksellers said:
‘The Happiest Refugee’ is a confirmation of the possibilities inherent in a multicultural Australia, based on equality of opportunity. The writing is fluid and satisfying, mixing seriousness, pathos and humour in equal amounts and is ultimately a tale of redemption and achievement through generosity of spirit and persistence of endeavour. I hope lots of Australians get to read his book and appreciate Australia through Anh's eyes.

The author’s response to winning The INDIE BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD:
Anh Do says this is probably the greatest achievement of his life. "In primary school I was a member of the "special needs" class - they told my mum I was struggling with letters and words, so she went out to St Vincent De Paul and bought me a box of second- hand books. When I found out I'd won "book of the year" the first person I called was my mum, who was so happy she cried on the phone. I did a bit too, to be honest."

Book Club’s Reviews of Last Month’s Titles
‘The Lake of Dreams’ by Kim Edwards – 7/10
Most of the group found it hard to relate to the protagonist, but overall the novel was thought to be well written and the scenes describing events surrounding the suffragette movement very interesting.

‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt  - 7/10
The characters in this book were not particularly likeable, but it is an interesting study of how the keeping of secrets can destroy relationships and even people’s lives. This book sparked much discussion about the consequences of not knowing where to draw the line of how much you should do to be accepted by a group.

ALSO
This extraordinary book has its genesis in a series of concerts first staged in 2004. Over four nights Paul Kelly performed, in alphabetical order, one hundred of his songs from the previous three decades. In between songs he told stories about them, and from those little tales grew ‘How to Make Gravy’, a memoir like no other. The special slipcase edition also includes a CD of the A-Z records, and is back in stock after selling out over Christmas. A must-have for Paul Kelly fans!

NEWSFLASH
Christopher Paolini is expected to release the final installment of his bestselling Inheritance Cycle Series later this year.
Originally intended to be a trilogy, Paolini has stated that during writing, the length of the third book grew, and the book was split into two parts to be published separately.
The release date and title of the final novel are still to be confirmed.

NEWS FROM OUR FAVOURITE AUTHORS
Kim Edwards:
Bestselling author has recently released ‘Lake of Dreams’:
At a crossroads in her life, Lucy Jarrett returns home from Japan, only to find herself haunted by her father's unresolved death a decade ago. Old longings stirred up by Keegan Fall, a local glass artist who was once her passionate first love, lead her into the unexpected. Late one night, as she paces the hallways of her family's rambling lakeside house, she discovers, locked in a window seat, a collection of objects that first appear to be useless curiosities, but soon reveal a deeper and more complex family past. Lucy discovers and explores the traces of her lineage from a heirloom tapestry and dusty political tracts to a web of allusions depicted in stained-glass windows throughout upstate New York-the family story she has always known is shattered. Lucy's quest for the truth reconfigures her family's history, links her to a unique slice of the suffragette movement, and yields dramatic insights that embolden her to live freely.

With surprises at every turn, this is an arresting saga in which every element emerges as a carefully placed piece of the puzzle that's sure to enthrall the millions of readers who loved ‘The Memory Keeper’s Daughter’.
Maggie Stiefvater:
‘Lament’ is written by the author of the hugely popular ‘Linger’ and ‘Shiver’:
Sixteen-year-old Dee is a cloverhand - someone who can see faeries.
So when she finds herself irresistibly drawn to beautiful, mysterious Luke, Dee knows that he wants something more dangerous than a summer romance. But what Dee doesn't realize that Luke is an assassin from the faerie world.
And she is his next target.
Jean M Auel:
Her ‘Earth’s Children’ series sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and after a ten year wait she is set to release the sixth installment on the 29th of March:
‘The Land of Painted Caves’ concludes the story of Ayla, her mate Jondalar, and their little daughter, Jonayla, taking readers on a journey of discovery and adventure as Ayla struggles to find a balance between her duties as a new mother and her training to become a Zelandoni one of the Ninth Cave community's spiritual leaders and healers.
